Very different math.

Well. The world has become a very different place in the last two weeks. COVID-19 has become a pandemic and now instead of tallying my vertical feet, I’m tallying mortality rates around the world.

To be honest, a lot has stayed the same in my house. I already worked from home. Paul was working from home 1-2 days a week, so switching to full time wasn’t a big deal (and we’ve both worked from home together before). The trails are still open for hiking, and the roads are still there for biking. Our coffee shop visits stopped with the closure … Continue reading

On Your Left.

I am sneezy, coughing, eye watering mess. Complete with fatigue, snot, and sinus pressure. In short? I have a cold.

It’s an interesting thing to be sick right now. No one ever wants to be near a person who coughs or sneezes. But with fears of COVID-19 high, I’m absolutely a persona non grata in public spaces. I am not self quarantining as I have neither risk factors nor symptoms of COVID-19 (no fever, period, and a productive cough over a dry one). But I am carrying around hand sanitizer to protect the rest of the world from my germs, … Continue reading

A very boring post on math.

1,366.12. That’s the magic number you get when you divide 500,000 by 366. Which is mildly important because 500,000 is the number of feet of elevation I’m trying to gain this year, and 366 is the number of days I have to do it in (thanks Leap Year!).

So, as today is the 62nd day of the year, I’ll multiply 62*1366.12 and that gives us 84,699.44. Happily, my total gain for the year so far is 92,698 ft. That means I’m about 8K ahead of schedule (yay!). It also means I’m less than 8K away from reaching my first 100,000ft. … Continue reading

Some updates!

It’s been a bit of a whirlwind month. We were lucky enough to host one friend for the past three weeks, and two additional friends for a long weekend overlapping that time. Much fun and merriment ensued, along with quite a few outdoor activities.

I was able to sneak in a few solo hikes:

Top of Green Mountain

And I dragged brought my friends along a few too:

At the top of the Flatirons hike
On the way to Royal Arch

But not all our fun contributed to our elevation goal:

Climbing at Movement
Exploring the steep glades at Eldora

Climate Rally.

Today I had the privilege of hopping on the bus to Denver to join three awesome co-workers at the Climate Rally, put on by Caroline Gleich alongside Katie Boué. It was centered around the Outdoor Retailer expo in Denver, and particularly encouraged outdoor industry folks to get out and rally.

A sizable group of folks gathered at the Convention Center and marched to the capitol. On the capitol steps we heard from a variety of speakers including Jeremy Jones (founder of Protect Our Winters), Clare Gallagher, 8 year old activist Madhvi4EcoEthics, 13 year old activist Haven ColemanContinue reading
